Centurion Expands Compass® Platform to Include Pleural and Intra-Abdominal Pressure Measuring

Compass for Thoracentesis

Compass digital pressure transducers deliver, quick, easy and precise pressure measurements and monitoring.

Centurion Medical Products, a leader in medical product innovation and global patient care, today launched its Compass digital pressure transducers for measuring and monitoring both pleural and intra-abdominal pressures (IAP).

The compact, sterile single-use Compass devices provide precise, quantitative pressure measurements while removing fluid during thoracentesis as well as when monitoring for intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.

Compass continues to demonstrate its leadership capability to solve a wide variety of physiological pressure measurement and monitoring challenges in a single, sterile, disposable device. Its applications have an immediate and profound effect on clinicians' ability to detect, treat and prevent potentially deadly outcomes from many diverse conditions. The expansion into IAP and thoracentesis procedures brings this powerful yet simple-to-use device to more people in need.

“Compass continues to demonstrate its leadership capability to solve a wide variety of physiological pressure measurement and monitoring challenges in a single, sterile, disposable device,” stated Centurion President and CEO Tom Archipley. “Its applications have an immediate and profound effect on clinicians’ ability to detect, treat and prevent potentially deadly outcomes from many diverse conditions. The expansion into IAP and thoracentesis procedures brings this powerful yet simple-to-use device to more people in need.”

Compass for Thoracentesis

Compass for Thoracentesis enables physicians to easily measure pressure when removing fluid during pleural effusion treatment. Clinical evidence demonstrates that measuring pleural pressure can help diagnose trapped lung while providing a quantitative method to maximize fluid removal and minimize risk.

It can also help avoid complications associated with too much fluid removal such as reexpansion pulmonary edema, which has a mortality rate as high as 20%.*

The device saves valuable diagnostic time as an alternative to traditional inaccurate, slow and awkward water-column manometers and pressure transduction setups with cables, tubing and monitors.

By capturing both positive and negative values in centimeters of water (cmH2O), it is ideally suited for use during thoracentesis.

Compass for Intra-abdominal Hypertension and Abdominal Compartment Syndrome

Compass for IAP monitors bladder pressure, providing early indications of intra-abdominal hypertension, which occurs in 81% of ICU patients*, and potentially lethal abdominal compartment syndrome.

The device connects easily to a standard Foley catheter and does not require expensive, complex setup.

The Compass family of digital pressure transducers also includes applications for measuring central venous pressure to assess septic patients, CVC/central line insertion, extremity compartment pressure and lumbar puncture.
